    Of Reflux and Green Poo

Olivia has been getting progressively fussier over the past week. Every day has brought new challenges from the mysteriously green colored poo to the confusing gagging, gurgling, and coughing that keeps her up at night. It climaxed last night and we decided it was time to call the pediatrician. Olivia wasn’t just fussing. She was screaming at every feeding. She started spitting up more often over the past week or so, but it has intensified to her spitting up in the middle of and after feedings. It kills me to see her in such pain. She screams and thrashes about in our arms, and there’s nothing we can do about it. Or so it seemed…

We bit the bullet and went to the pediatrician today. It turns out that Olivia is experiencing GERD, or more commonly known simply as acid reflux in infants. She’s on Zantac, which will reduce the pain caused by the reflux, but it won’t cure the reflux. We’ll be dealing with lots of spit-up, but at least she won’t be screaming in pain over it anymore!

The nurses took the liberty to measure and weigh Olivia… are you ready for this? 9 pounds, 14 ounces, 21.75 inches in length. She’s in the 50th percentile for weight and 75th percentile for height. Beefcake! We’re baffled. Where the heck is it coming from? She’s not large looking or anything, just… long and plain old big! The doctor assured us that she’s right on target given her birth weight, so no worries on overfeeding her or catering to a formula addiction ;)

We also made a trip in to see Daddy and get fitted for Mommy’s Warhammer commemorative jacket. It’s awesome and then some! I can’t wait to get it. I’ve been needing a new, high quality jacket for some time now. Olivia did well in the office, though of course she was sleeping the entire time so no one got to see her pretty eyes. Warhammer’s doing well in ramping up for launch, but at this point I think that I am getting more sleep than any of the hard-working people on the project.

Picture: Waiting on Daddy to get home with the Zantac only to find out that CVS, Rite-Aid, Target, Walmart, and Wegman’s all carry infant Zantac with alcohol in it — what the $%&@?

Bless her heart :( …I hope the Zantac will help!

“Daddy’s Girl” is the cutest picture. She looks so grown-up! So sorry to hear about the diagnosis but glad there is some medicine to help. Do you need more bibs?

I can’t believe she is going to be tall with all of us so short. Maurice’s dad’s family were all tall so that must be the “tall” gene.

Give the little princess a kiss for me.

Oh boy do we need bibs! She goes through them very quickly… we have about 12 now but they get soaked at each feeding.

The zantac will be a miracle worker for all of you. Once isabella was on it she no longer was in pain and was able to sleep. Isabella was not a spitter but a screamer. The zantac will help reduce the acid which will keep it from coming up and causing all the issues. Once she is at the point of sitting up on her own the valve in her stomach should also be strong enough to keep the acid down. Over the first 6 months we had to adjust the dosage as her weight changed. She had no effects from the alcohol. If it was a hazard to their health the fda would not have approved it for use with infants. As a parent you obviously have to make decisions you feel comfortable with for your child. This as just our experience and I wanted to share as being someone who had dealt with it and reaped benefits from the medication.

    :)

Poor thing! Let me know how she is doing after trying the new meds.

Regular Zantac for adults doesn’t have alcohol… so obviously there’s a reason for it?… Who knows…ask your doctor…

    Cute picture!

I can sympathize with the spitting up part…I have an insane number of bibs and burp cloths for Lucy! However, she never seems to experience discomfort, so I guess we’re lucky there! Our pedi offered to let us give her medicine but said if she didn’t seem in pain, we could just stick it out until she outgrows it. So that’s what we did. Still waiting on her to outgrow it though!

I hope to see a picture of the jacket someday. I’m all excited about WAR!

Drake had acid reflux and spit up all the time. Thankfully he didn’t projectile spit, just all over himself. He lived in bibs until about 7 months. We finally just weaned him from the medicine a few weeks ago and he is doing great.
Reflux is no fun, but keep plenty of bibs on hand and you guys should make it through :)
